We’re in a brand new year and it’s a time when many homeowners are considering their DIY projects for the next 12 months.

Now that the chaos of Christmas has been packed away safely for another year, the decks have been cleared and you’ll start to notice things like scuffed walls, sagging furnishings and tired floors.

Thinking of making a change? We’ve assembled this handy list of things to think about when you’re choosing your new wood flooring. And of course, we’re always on hand to help. Our team prides itself on providing expert advice founded on years of experience in the industry and customer service is our main priority.

Who lives in your house?

Just as with carpets, it’s important to consider what your floor will be subjected to on a daily basis. For example, if you have children, dogs or are an outdoorsy person, it may be worth looking at fumed/smoked wood if you’d like a darker colour, or a light-coloured but textured style such as herringbone or chevron as these will be more forgiving of minor scratches and imperfections.

Do you have underfloor heating?

If the answer is yes, you will need to look at engineered wood flooring to ensure that the wood maintains its integrity and continues to look as it should over time. Our experts can provide technical advice on thickness and specification according to your individual requirements.

How light is the room?

If the room you are flooring is small or perhaps doesn’t get much natural light, it’s worth looking at lighter colours as this helps to prevent making the room feel smaller. It can give a more airy feel and give the appearance of opening up the space.

How will you look after the new flooring?

Whether you clean your own home or are lucky enough to have a cleaner, caring for the new wood floor will need to become part of the routine. It’s of paramount importance that wood flooring is regularly cleaned and maintained to prolong its life and keep it looking fantastic. We can offer advice and products for cleaning your floor, as well as providing a maintenance package.

What is your budget?

As with most things, wood flooring varies in price dependent on the type of wood, the method of production, finishes and so on. It’s a purchase that could very well stay with you for a lifetime so it’s important to ensure that you choose something you will continue to love for years to come and not just be swayed by price.
